Topic: Transformative Highway Projects in Providence

Learn how community engagement around two major highway projects is reshaping the landscape of Providence, RI. Public engagement efforts led by the City of Providence successfully changed the dialogue around and outcome of these major infrastructure projects-- one in the heart of Downtown Providence and the other in one of the City's most diverse low-income neighborhoods-- to ensure that environmental justice concerns and good urbanism reversed poor decisions made during previous decades of urban renewal.

Biography

Martina Haggerty serves as Special Projects Director at the City of Providence Department of Planning and Development where she oversees planning, redevelopment, and transportation projects and policy initiatives. She is a passionate advocate for walkable and bikeable urbanism and inclusive planning processes. From 2009-2015, Ms. Haggerty served as a Principal Planner for the City of Providence and prior to that as an urban designer in the private sector. She holds a Master of Science degree in Architecture and Urban Design from Pratt Institute and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Roger Williams University.
